Since establishing the first indexed mutual fund in the US in 1976, the Vanguard Group has grown into one of the world's largest and most respected investment management companies. Our history

 

1975

Vanguard begins operations in the US with John C Bogle at the helm.

1976

Vanguard® 500 Index Fund opens - the first indexed mutual fund available to individual investors in the US.

1982

John J Brennan joins Vanguard. He is now the Chairman & CEO of the Vanguard Group.

1986

Vanguard launches the first bond index fund for individual investors in the US.

1990

Vanguard creates the first international stock index funds.

1996

Jeremy G Duffield establishes Vanguard's Australian office. Launch of Vanguard's Index Funds to wholesale clients.

1998

Australian office launches the Vanguard® Investor Index Funds for retail investors and the Vanguard® Pooled Superannuation Trusts.

2000

Vanguard opens Tokyo office.

2001

Launch of the Vanguard® Personal Superannuation Plan in Australia.

2003

Vanguard opens Singapore office.

2004

Vanguard becomes first fund manager in Australia to report after-tax returns.

2005

Hon. Mr Peter Costello MP Treasurer and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party and Vanguard Group CEO & Chairman John J. Brennan officially open Vanguard's new Asia Pacific headquarters in Southbank, Melbourne.

2006

Vanguard celebrates 10 years in Australia.

2007

Vanguard Funds under Management reached $78bn (Oct 07).
Jeremy Duffield promoted to Managing Director, Vanguard Asia Pacific.
Ian Alcock takes up Head of Australia position.
Vanguard launches new products in Australia including the Vanguard® Personal Pension Plan, Vanguard® International Small Companies, Vanguard® Global Infrastructure and the Vanguard® Cash Reserve Fund.
