About the graphs and charts

The top graph shows the growth of $10,000 invested on 1 July 1970. The graph assumes that the $10,000 is fully invested (and remains fully invested) in the relevant index for the asset class and that there are no acquisition costs or taxes and that all income is reinvested. The index for each asset class is listed below. Inflation has not been taken into account.

 

The bottom chart allows you to select a financial year between 1970 and 2008 and to see the index return for your chosen year for all asset classes. By clicking on the "Best", "Average" or "Worst" button, you can see the following information:

- "Best" shows the best annual return in a financial year between 1 July 1970 and 30 June 2008.

- "Worst" shows the lowest annual return in a financial year between 1 July 1970 and 30 June 2008.

- "Average" shows the average annual return for the period between 1 July 1970 and 30 June 2008.

 

A financial year is the period from 1 July to 30 June.

 

How the returns were calculated

The following indexes were used:

- Australian shares: Index prior to 1980 is the MSCI Australia Gross Total Return Index. From 1980 the index is the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Accumulation Index.

- International shares: MSCI World ex-Australia Net Total Return Index.

- Fixed interest (Australian bonds): Index prior to 1977 calculated by Global Financial Data. From February 1977 to December 1989 the index is the Commonwealth Bank All Series Greater Than 10 years Bond Accumulation Index. From September 1989 the index is the UBS Warburg Australia Composite Bond Accumulation Index.

- International interest (international bonds): Citigroup World Government Bond Index (AUD Hedged).

- Property: S&P/ASX Listed Property Trust Accumulation Index.

- Cash: Data prior to March 1987 supplied by Reserve Bank of Australia. From March 1987 the index is the UBS Warburg Australia Bank Bill Accumulation Index.
