This article analyses the gross and net returns of the past 25 years to demonstrate how much investors typically have lost to taxes and to fees. The author, James Garland, president of the Jeffery Company, argues that the biggest costs to investors are taxes and that a tax-managed index fund is particularly effective at reducing taxes and thereby improving net returns.
