ETFs - background

The first popular Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange on March 9 1990, and Vanguard entered the US ETF market in 2001 (having launched the world’s first index funds for retail investors in 1976). Today, ETFs are one of the most-actively traded shares in the US – to name just one market. Europe’s first ETF was listed on listed on April 11, 2000 on the Deutsche Boerse.
