John James named Head of Vanguard Investments Australia 15 Mar 10
Vanguard Investments Australia has announced that John James has been appointed as Managing Director, effective 1 May. Mr. James, 42, is an Australian who has worked as an executive at Vanguard's U.S. headquarters in Pennsylvania since 2008.
In his time with Vanguard in the USA, Mr. James headed the broker-dealer sales and distribution division for the firm's Financial Advisor Services group, and more recently, began development of a new global line of business focused on financial advisors and other intermediaries, with an emphasis on ETFs.
James Norris, Managing Director of Vanguard's international businesses, said: 'John brings the right mix of executive experience and understanding of the investment needs of individual investors, financial advisers, and institutions. Under his leadership, Vanguard will be well-positioned for its next phase of growth in Australia.'
Vanguard, an index fund specialist, is one of Australia's top 10 fund managers ranked by funds under management with more than $80 billion managed on behalf of institutional, adviser and individual clients.
Mr. James has a wealth of experience in the financial services industry. From 1991 through 2004, Mr. James held senior positions with prominent Australian and New Zealand financial companies. He was general manager of corporate distribution with MLC (and had responsibility for NAB's Business Bank Wealth management arm) and before that was a senior executive with Rothschild Australia Asset Management. Prior to joining Vanguard in 2008, Mr. James spent four years as chief executive officer of Port Adelaide Football Club (AFL).
Along with industry qualifications awarded by the Securities Institute of Australia and the National Insurance Institute, Mr. James earned an M.B.A. from The University of Adelaide.
Mr. James said: 'Vanguard is the rare example of an investment company that truly puts its clients' interests first, and is entirely focused on helping them to be successful. This homecoming is both a tremendous honour and exciting opportunity as our Australian business continues to evolve and expand.'
Jeremy Duffield, who has served as acting Managing Director since November 2009, will resume his role as Chairman of Vanguard Australia and Managing Director of Vanguard International Planning and Development.
