You can apply via our website. You will need to:

  1. Consent to our Privacy Policy
  2. Provide name and an email address
  3. Provide an Australian mobile number for ongoing verification purposes.
  4. Set-up a username and password for online access to Vanguard Online.
  5. Accept our Vanguard Personal Investor terms and conditions.
  6. You'll also need to provide some personal details and may need to verify your identity using your driver's licence, passport or Medicare card numbers.
  7. Confirm your occupation details, source of funds and verify your residency for tax purposes (or provide your Tax File Number).
  8. Once your identity has been verified, and you've linked a Australian bank account, your account is ready to go.

Currently you're not able to open a Vanguard Personal Investor Account on behalf of a minor (any person aged under 18).

To be eligible to open a Vanguard Personal Investor Account, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Be an Australian resident
  • Be an Australian tax resident
  • Have an Australian residential address
  • Have an Australian bank account
  • Have an Australian mobile number that can be used for ongoing security authentication.

Currently, you are not able to grant a Power of Attorney access to your account.

You can give your adviser access to your Vanguard account provided they’re registered for Vanguard Online.

  • If you’ve a Vanguard Personal Investor Account, please fill in and submit this form via the ‘Message Us’ section within Vanguard Online. It doesn’t require your signature.
  • If you’ve a separate Vanguard investment account*, please fill in, sign, and submit this form by mail or send us a scanned copy via the ‘Message Us’ section within Vanguard Online.


*If you haven’t opened a Vanguard Personal Investor Account.

Currently, you are not able to grant a legal authorised representative access to your account.

You should keep Vanguard up to date with any changes to your contact details. You will also need an Australian mobile number to continue to access your account online as it is used for ongoing verification. You will not be required to close your account, however you should seek independent advice if you are changing your tax residency status.

It is important that we have your current contact details. If your contact details have changed, you can update your details by:

Mobile number (as this enables two factor authentication)

No. For identification and security purposes each investor must provide an Australian mobile number and unique email address.

  • Log in to Vanguard Online.
  • Select 'Settings' from the left-hand menu.
  • Select 'Password' and follow the instructions.

Just click the > Forgotten password link on the LOG IN page and enter your username and email address.

We'll send a security verification code to your mobile phone number, which will allow you to reset your password.

Your Vanguard Investor Number is your unique customer number. This number can be found on the 'Settings' page when you log in to Vanguard Online.

Keeping your account secure is our priority. Two factor authentication (2FA) is an extra layer of security to protect your account.

We'll send a security verification code to your mobile phone number to verify your online activities, for example, when you request to transfer money from your Vanguard Cash Account to a linked bank account.

You can update your banking details by logging into Vanguard Online, selecting 'Settings' from the left hand menu and then selecting 'Bank accounts.'

Keeping your account secure is our priority. When you change your bank account details, for extra verification, there is a temporary 9-day hold on transferring money from your Vanguard Cash Account to your linked bank account. During this time, you will still be able to deposit cash, buy and sell your investments via Vanguard Online.

Vanguard will try to resolve the complaint and get back to you as soon as possible, but in any event, we will provide a final response within 45 days of receipt.

No, JPMorgan has been appointed as the sub-custodian to hold any listed securities in your Vanguard Personal Investor Account on your behalf. JPMorgan holds legal ownership of these listed securities subject to Vanguard’s direction, and you (the investor) retain beneficial ownership.

We take your account security very seriously and will never ask you to supply any personal details via email or text messaging. You will receive account notifications from time to time, including emails and text messages. We will email you from time to time if, for example, you have subscribed to our Smart Investing™ newsletter.

If you're concerned about any emails you receive from us, call us on 1300 655 101 and we can let you know what we have or have not sent you.

First, check there is a problem with your browser or internet connection by accessing some other sites. If they are working, close your browser, re-open it and try logging to Vanguard Online again. If you still can't log in, make sure you're using the right username and password. If these are both correct, wait a few minutes and try again, in case there is a short-term disruption to our system.

You will receive comprehensive consolidated reporting on all investments held in your Vanguard Personal Investor Account. These include:

  • Vanguard Personal Investor Quarterly Statement: You will receive this at the end of each quarter. This statement details your opening and closing account balance, your transaction details and portfolio valuation.
  • Vanguard Personal Investor Annual Statement: You will receive this at the end of the financial year. This statement details your opening and closing account balance, your transaction your transaction details and portfolio valuation.
  • Vanguard Personal Investor Annual Tax Report: We will provide you with information regarding your annual tax position for your account after the end of each financial year.

You will receive an email notifying you when your statements are available on Vanguard Online.

Your statements will be available to you on Vanguard Online and we will email you letting you know when your statement is available.

To access your statements online:

  1. Log in to Vanguard Online with your username and password.
  2. Select 'Statements' from the left-hand menu.

There are 3 ways you can transfer money into your Vanguard Cash Account:

  1. Direct debit through your linked Australian bank account. To make a direct debit, simply select log in to Vanguard Online > Cash > Deposit and then follow the instructions.
  2. Direct credit from your bank account using your Vanguard Cash Account BSB and account number. Your BSB and account number is shown under the heading 'Vanguard Cash Account.'
  3. BPAY®: You can find the biller code and customer reference number (CRN) when you select 'Deposit with BPAY' from the 'Cash' screen within Vanguard Online.

The settlement times for BPAY®, direct debit and direct credit transactions from financial institutions are as follows:

You can also view the current interest rate from within the Cash Account by clicking "View interest details". Interest rates are subject to change.

The 0.10% per annum Account Fee only applies to the value of holdings in ASX direct shares held within a Vanguard Personal Account. If you have multiple accounts with ASX direct shares the Account Fee will be levied on each account.

Managed funds

Orders for managed fund units will be processed on the same day if received by 1pm AET. Orders received after 1pm AET, will be processed the next business day. A cash transfer can take up to 3 business days depending on the financial institution that money is being transferred to.

ETFs and ASX shares

Exchange traded funds and ASX shares can be bought or sold during normal ASX trading hours, from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm (AET). Settlement takes place 2 business days after a trade occurs. A cash transfer can take up to 3 business days depending on the financial institution that money is being transferred to.

Managed funds

Managed fund distributions are automatically reinvested into further units of the same fund. However, you can elect to have your distributions paid as income.

  1. If you are a Vanguard Personal Investor accountholder you can change your distribution preference to "Credit to my Vanguard Cash Account" by completing a Change of details form. Once completed, login to Vanguard Online, go to "Message us", click "Send a secure message", select "Form submissions", and then attach your completed form.
  2. If you are not a Vanguard Personal Investor accountholder you can change your distribution preference to a nominated bank account. Go to the "Forms and notices" section on the Vanguard website and download and complete the Change of account details form under "I want to change my managed fund distribution options". Once completed, login to Vanguard Online, go to "Message us", click "Send a secure message", select "Form submissions", and then attach your completed form.

Exchange traded funds

Distributions from exchange traded funds are paid into your Vanguard Cash Account. These can be used to buy additional units in the same funds or other securities available on the Vanguard Personal Investor platform. We are working towards offering the ability to reinvest these payments.

ASX shares

Dividends from ASX shares are paid into your Vanguard Cash Account. These can be used to buy additional shares or other securities available on the Vanguard Personal Investor platform.

Vanguard Personal Investor Account is currently available for individual, joint,SMSF and Company account types.

Vanguard Personal Investor is being introduced in a phased rollout which will see additional functionality and features added over time to further enhance the investing experience.

No. Joint accounts are separate to individual accounts. You will need to create a new account covering both account holders.

Investment holdings held in individual names cannot be transferred to joint accounts.

Vanguard Personal Investor joint accounts are limited to two individuals.

Yes. If only one investor provides a TFN or TFN exemption, an amount of tax will be withheld (applying the top marginal tax rate plus levies) from any future interest or investment income on the whole account.
