How to make a death benefit claim
Claiming a death benefit following the loss of a loved one will likely be a difficult time for you. Vanguard Super can help you through the process and keep you informed about the claim’s progress.
These are the broad steps involved:
1. Call us
Call us on 1300 655 101 (8:00am to 6:00pm AET, Monday to Friday) as soon as practicable to start the claims process. We will need a few details about the deceased member – such as their full name, residential address, Vanguard Super member number and date of death.
2. We will assign a case manager
A dedicated case manager will be assigned to help you through the claims process. They will be able to help you complete forms and other documentation, and keep you informed of your claim’s progress.
3. We will help you with forms and documentation
Your case manager can help you complete, collect and submit all necessary forms and documentation (such as a death certificate). To help ensure things move along smoothly, it’s important that all forms are completed accurately and in full.
4. We will review your claim
We’ll review your death benefit claim. If we need further information, we’ll let you know. If the deceased member had death insurance, we’ll also lodge a claim with our insurer.
5. The Trustee will make a decision
The Trustee will review all the information provided, and decide how the deceased member’s death benefit will be paid. If there are multiple claimants, each one will be notified separately. Each claimant will have 28 days to agree or object to the Trustee’s decision.
6. We will make the benefit payment(s)
If no objections are received, or once any objections are resolved, the payment will be made directly to each beneficiary’s bank account as per the payment instructions we receive.
