What is a DASP?

A Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) allows eligible temporary residents to withdraw the super they earned while working in Australia.

Super is designed to support you in retirement. But if you’re not planning to stay in Australia long term, the DASP process gives you a way to access those savings after you leave.

Who can apply?

You may be eligible to claim your super if:

You worked in Australia on a temporary resident visa
Your visa has expired or been cancelled
You have already left Australia

You generally can’t apply if:

You’re an Australian or New Zealand citizen
You’re a permanent resident of Australia.

How to claim your super

Applying for a DASP is done through the ATO. Before you apply, it helps to have a few key details ready:

passport and visa information
proof of identity documents
your super account details
bank account details (please note, it must be an Australian bank account so please keep your account open)
your tax file number (if available).

Once your application is submitted through the ATO, your super fund will process the payment.

How long does the process take?

If we get all the information we need in the application from the ATO, and everything matches at our end, processing the payment will take around 5-7 working days.

If the amount of super you’re claiming is over $5,000, it may take a little longer. That’s because we’ll need to ask you for some ID documents to confirm your identity. We’ll contact you if we need to confirm your identity.

What happens if you don’t claim it?

If you leave Australia and don’t withdraw your super, your account may eventually be transferred to the ATO as unclaimed money.

That means you can still access it later, but the process may take longer.
