Sole traders usually register their business under an ABN and typically make all the decisions about how the business is run, although staff may be employed along the way to help.

Sole traders aren't bound by the Super Guarantee rules that apply to many other businesses – so if you’re a sole trader, you can choose how much and how often you contribute to your super (within the contribution limits).

Some sole traders contribute to their super on a regular basis. Others may choose to make a contribution towards the end of the financial year after seeing how their business has performed – they then have the option of claiming a tax deduction for the contribution.
